Merits and Demerits of a Fixed Deposits

Image result for fixed deposit account in Nigeria

Even if the process of placing a fixed deposit varies slightly from one bank to another, opening a fixed deposit account is still very simple. First, determine how much you want to place in your deposit plan. If you do not have a regular savings account in the bank, you will have to fill-in a deposit mandate form. In some banks, you would also need to fill-in reference forms so you can deposit cheques issued by third parties.

The bank will require; passport photograph, proof of identification, a copy recent receipt from any public utilities and a copy of a residence or work permit for foreign account holders is required. If you have existing account(s) in the bank, you need to just fill-in a form stating the following: account name, account number, deposit amount, duration of deposit.

The most important advantage of investing in Fixed Deposit is that, it offers guaranteed return because there are very low risks and uncertainties as compared to investment in stock market. Furthermore fixed deposits are very flexible and convenient in nature because one can have fixed deposit with maturity for 1 month or 1 year with any amount unlike real estate where one needs to invest heavily. In addition, investing in a fixed deposit account earns you a higher interest rate than leaving your money in a savings account as FD’s interest rates are highly negotiable. It is easy to raise a loan against your FD. One can borrow up to 90 per cent of the FD’s amount.

As attractive as fixed deposits can be, they may not necessarily be suitable for everyone. One of the biggest disadvantages of investing money in fixed deposit is that, its returns are low compared to other investment options and if the inflation is very high fixed deposit investors are the worst hit as the return from fixed deposit may not be sufficient to cover the high expenses due to inflation.

Also, If one invests all of his or her money in fixed deposits, he or she may not enjoy the benefits of diversification which one get if one invests the money in stock market, real estate, gold and other alternate investments. As far as taxation is concerned fixed deposits are taxed at normal rates of taxation and hence one cannot take the tax benefit from this investment, unlike the infrastructure bonds.

Moreover, because your money is locked away with the bank, often for months, you lose the flexibility of a regular, day-to-day savings or current account. If you do withdraw your money from your fixed deposit account before the agreed maturity date, you will likely be penalised in the form of reduced interest or penalty fees.                                                                                                  -(Credit: Nairaland)

RELATIONSHIP: 5 Signs that Tells you to Move On.

Image result for Relationship

Moving on is one thing so many people find rather difficult to do. Often times, people hold on to people or things that are not so beneficiary. It is important to know why you should move on. Instead of wasting time on something that threatens your peace, you should rather move on.

These are some signs to tell you when to move on.

1.Loss of interest.
When there is no interest or reason to push forward, it could be a bad sign. Moving on is one thing people should always learn to do. Any relationship where interest is lost is like a waste. There is no point wasting time on someone you are not interested in. When you no longer see the need to make it work. Or there is loss if interest from things that normally mean the world to both of you.

2. Incompatibility.
This happens when you and your partner don't share same goal, beliefs and desires. It becomes a thing of worry when you are with a partner that is not on same level with you in terms of compatibility.

3. all forms of abuse.
Abuse could come in various forms. It could be emotional, physical or mental. Abuse is not healthy for you and your partner. As much as possible, keep off any relationship that threatens your peace of mind. If your partner constantly abuse you in any form, you should discuss it or quit for a while.

4. Constant cheating
It is important to know when to draw the line. A partner that is fond of cheating on you has no regards whatsoever. If a person cheats once and you decide to give them a second chance, there is probability they wouldn't stop cheating. This is not too good for the relationship sake.

5. Disrespect
A partner that does not respect you is of no good to you. When your partner sees you as nothing and think it is pointless staying with you, then you should run. A partner that talks to you anyhow or disrespect you wouldnt respect anything that has to do with you. Respect is reciprocal.                                       -(Credit: Nairaland)

Doing More With Less

Image result for Doing more with Less

Most companies are asking employees to do more with less. These demands may produce positive results in the short term, but they are not sustainable in the long term. “Organizations can do more with less simply by not leaving so much untapped performance on the table.” The frustration people often face in these conditions is not an engagement problem; it is more often an enablement problem.

Mark Royal and Tom Agnew of the Hay Group, explain that The Enemy of Engagement is frustration caused by a highly engaged employee’s inability to succeed in a role due to organizational barriers or the inability to bring the bulk of his or her talents, skills, and abilities to the job. Ironically, the more engaged they are, the more frustrated they get because they care more.

“Doing more with less doesn’t mean conjuring higher levels of motivation out of thin air, but rather allowing motivated employees to perform at their best. It’s about harnessing and unleashing the full potential of frustrated employees—those who want to give their best but can’t due to organizational barriers and constraints.”

Typically we associate better engagement with leadership, but what drives it is better management. Fixing engagement means dealing with the frustration of thwarted employees. Specific management practices detailed by the authors include:

  • Create specific, measurable goals and clearly lay out what employees need to do—the precise behaviors and activities—to achieve them.
  • Provides employees with regular, concrete, and constructive feedback about their work and its value to delivering business strategy.
  • Empower employees to make the decisions necessary to execute and excel at their jobs—and make sure employees understand which decisions they control.
  • Prioritize investments in resources and staff with an emphasis on providing employees with the tools and support they need to succeed.
  • Assign and coordinate roles with serious consideration of each employee’s strengths, reward and reinforce teamwork and collaboration.
One of the most actionable things to do is to simply ask: “How can we change things around here to help you be more effective?” By doing so “a manager creates an opportunity for an employee to speak honestly and openly about enablement issues.”

Enablement is what drives engagement and what ultimately frustrates it. Get people what they need to do their jobs and get out of the way. The Enemy of Engagement is focused on employees who are engaged, motivated, and loyal—who aren’t ready to give up—but who are experiencing frustration on the job. Ultimately, it requires that we rethink our notions of what it means to be a leader and what it means to manage. We insert ourselves far more than we should.
